Margaret Jones Lander Scheibler of Due West, wife of the late J.W. Scheibler, and the last surviving grandchild of the Rev. Samuel Lander, founder of Lander University, died December 5, 2016 at the age of 104.
Margaret was born at home May 14, 1912 in Calhoun Falls, SC. She was a 1933 graduate of Lander College and spent most of her life and career in Atlanta where she worked for Westinghouse and Emory University Hospital. Margaret was a brave and adventurous woman who liked to get out and go. She travelled extensively with her husband and on her own. Most recently, at the age of 103, she spent a day as a “trail angel” on the Appalachian Trail.
Surviving are two nephews, Col. James A. Lander (Jolene) and Col. Robert B. Lander; and two nieces, Elizabeth Lander Purcell and Caroline Jones Lander; nine grand nieces and nephews, Connie M. Purcell, Britt Lander Snelling, Leslie Lander Orr, Gail Lander Floyd, Jeannie Lander Brehmer, James David Lander, Robert Lander, Suzanne Lander Chudejova, and many great nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, three brothers, William Lander, Samuel Lander, Ernest M. Lander, Jr., a sister Miriam Lander, and two grand nieces, Terrie Lander Duffy and Vickie Lander Beckham, predeceased Margaret.
Her ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony on the family plot in Williamston, SC.
