Loyd David Plaster, 89, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024 in Mauldin, South Carolina.
The son of Dewey Leonard and Gladys Mabe Plaster, Loyd was born in a farmhouse by kerosene lamp in Dillon Forks, Virginia on April 3, 1935. In his nearly nine decades on this earth, he continued to be in awe of the inventions and changes he was able to be a part of.
Loyd served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. He focused on artillery intelligence and was also a part of the army track team. This was just the beginning of the travel that would be a thread throughout the story of his life.
After the army, he attended Elon College where he was the senior class president, a student senator, accounting lab instructor, and a long-distance runner, lettering in track all four years.
One of the accomplishments he was most proud of was his work with the Federal Highway Administration. He was recruited out of college to help standardize and develop computerized state accounting systems. As part of this work he lived all over the country, and later all over the world, including Yellowstone National Park, Sacramento, Hawaii, Boston, and Kuwait.
His life was full of so many incredible stories that his daughter, Susannah, encouraged him to write them down. He was incredibly proud of the 500+ page book he wrote, which he dedicated to the memories of three of his loved ones who passed away before him: his wife, Paulette Amon Plaster, his little brother, Buren Edward Plaster, and his daughter, Amanda Lee (Plaster) Varco.
He is survived by his daughter, Susannah K. Plaisted of South Carolina, and his son, Tyler Plaster of Florida.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at NHC of Mauldin for all the love and care Loyd was given at the end of his life.
Arrangements are being made by the Cremation Society of South Carolina. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
