Louis William Brummer

Louis W. Brummer, 97, died on March 2, 2015. Born in New Britain, CT, he graduated Newton, MA High School and Bowdoin College, ME (1939). A dedicated community leader, he is remembered for his vision, generosity and love of family. A true gentleman, Lou enjoyed people, nature, books, music and problem-solving.
Lou married Ruth M. Pfost in 1942. They had five children who survive: William A. Brummer (Candy) of N. Augusta, Janet Yusi (Dennis-deceased) of Greenville, Joan Criswell (Don) of Royse City, TX, David Brummer (Louisa) of Springfield, VA and Paul Brummer (Jane) of Salem, VA. Fifteen grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren lovingly remember "Pop." He was predeceased by Ruth (1980), second wife, Sara R. Stivers (1981-1992), and third wife, Edith Ballenger Wright (1992-2014).
After Army service in WWII and work as an accountant, his career with Chemstrand Corp. brought him to Greenville in 1961 as Director of its Mgmt. Information Center, an innovator in computer use. He was an incorporator of First Piedmont Bank & Trust Co. Visionary service included boards of the Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Phillis Wheatley Center, Goodwill Industries, United Way, Greenville Chorale, SCORE, Rotary and committees to address social issues. He enjoyed volunteering as a Scoutmaster, literacy tutor and driver for Meals on Wheels.
His Christian faith was expressed in active membership at John Knox Presbyterian, Buncombe St. United Methodist, Westminster Presbyterian churches and the weekly Men's Prayer Breakfast at Christ Episcopal Church. His challenge gift of half the cost of a Habitat for Humanity house exemplified his generosity.
Services will be held at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 35 Shannon Dr., Greenville 29615. Visitation is Friday, March 13, 5-7pm. Memorial service is Saturday, March 14, 11am, followed by a private family lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenville YMCA or Meals on Wheels.
