Lenore Ruth Smith Read, 94, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 20th, 2018 in the Memory Care Facility at Greenville Place in Greenville, SC. She was born November 23, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Stanley Clifford and Ruth Shipton Smith. She graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio and enrolled in Rockmont Bible College in Denver, Colorado where she graduated in 1945. Lenore was a talented musician, she sang in a college trio and was an accomplished piano player. She met her husband, the late Dr. William R. Read in 1945 at Rockmont Bible College where he enrolled after serving in the 3rd army in the European theatre in WW2 under General Patton. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky where her husband graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary in 1951. They moved their young family to Brazil in 1952 where they served as Presbyterian missionaries for 15 years.
Lenore will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her sons, Richard Stanley, Ronald William and Robert James. She was also pre-deceased by her sister, Dorothy, her brother, Donald, and her daughter, Ruth Anne Carpenter, who passed away June 16, 2016 in Jacksonville, Florida. Carrying her memory are Richard’s two children, Renee and Richie, Ronald’s children, Melissa, Matthew and Megan and Robert’s children, Timothy, Tiffany, Taylor and Thomas. She is also survived by 8 wonderful great-children.
The family and friends of Lenore Read will celebrate her life on Monday June 25th at 1pm at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 3890 Moore-Duncan Highway in Moore, SC. Pastor Bill Slattery will officiate the Memorial Service. The committal service will be held for Dr. William Read and his wife Lenore, in Estes Park, Colorado on Wednesday, June 27th.
