Laura Estep Hickey, went to be with our Lord and Savior on December 13, 2021 in Greenville, SC. She died peacefully after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Laura was born on May 24, 1960 in Staunton, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her father Frank Leonard Estep and her grandparents, Marguerite Crismond, Richard and Alice Walden. She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Rob) Frank Hickey (Milena), Thomas (Tom) Ryan Hickey, her mother Barbara Walden Estep and sister, Allison Estep Rashley (Neil). Her nephews, Andrew Hutto (English), Adrian Rashley, III, nieces, Virginia and Meredith Rashley and her ex-husband, Robert (Bob) Hickey.
Laura grew up in Columbia, SC and was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church, where her uncle, The Reverend Richard Claude Walden, Jr. was given the privilege to baptize her. She attended Spring Valley High School and graduated from Richland Northeast High School in 1979. She received an Associate Business degree from Brevard College in NC and attended University of South Carolina prior to moving to Georgia where she received a Medical Assisting Degree from Lanier Technical College in Oakwood, GA.
She later moved to Florida and worked in the medical field and was going back to school to receive a degree in Christian Counseling from Liberty University in Virginia. While continuing her work in the medical field she would email her friends and family daily devotionals and witness to everyone she met. After being diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer, she moved to Greenville, SC to receive medical care and treatment in September. Her family felt very blessed that God gave us three months to have time to be with her. Especially having her sons and from Texas and Florida to see her the week before she passed away.
We felt blessed to be able to take care of her and want to thank the Cancer Society of Greenville County, Piedmont Fire Department, PRISMA Oncology, Greenville Post Acute and Wren Hospice Care as well as friends and family that have supported us.
Laura was a very caring and loving person and will be greatly missed by her friends and family. We are looking forward to the day we will meet Jesus and rejoice with her and all of our loved ones who are in Heaven.
The family will have a memorial service for Laura on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Taylors First Baptist Chapel in Greenville, SC at 1:30 pm. All are welcome to come and greet the family prior to the service.
