Kenneth Ray Whitworth, affectionately known by many as Ken, passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on December 30, 1936, to the late Rev. A.C. Whitworth and Sara Whitworth, Ken's life was a testament to service, love, and faith.
Ken's journey alongside his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara Thurmond Whitworth, was one marked by enduring companionship and mutual devotion. Together, they raised a family that included their son, David Kent, and his companion Jenn Carr, their daughter Leah Dawn Cobb, her husband Richard, and their adored grandson, Cody Cobb. He was a cherished brother, now reunited with his siblings Jim, Margaret Bess (Lee), Glenn, Dean, and Del Ray, all of whom predeceased him.
His six years in the National Guard and subsequent eight years of active duty in the Navy stood as a testament to Ken's dedication to his country. Following his military service, he contributed significantly to the aircraft industry, spending valuable time with MacDonald Aircraft, U.S. Naval Air, Eastern Airlines and Lockheed Martin.
Ken was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his deep-seated Christian faith. An Ordained Deacon at Elder Springs Baptist Church, he played a pivotal role in initiating a Jr. church at Perrine First Baptist Church and skillfully led training union classes. His unwavering commitment extended to volunteering at the Life Center at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, impacting countless lives through his service.
Beyond his community and spiritual involvement, Ken's passions lay in his creative endeavors. He was an accomplished bowl turner, wood carver, painter, cake decorator, and created needle point canvases. His hands were always busy crafting, and though knitting eluded his mastery, it did not diminish his joy for artistic expression.
To know Ken Whitworth was to encounter a faith-filled, selfless, and intelligent individual who taught by example the virtue of living a generous, purposeful life. Known as a gentleman and undoubtedly a gentle man, Ken's profound love for Jesus and his family will remain a guiding light for those who had the privilege to know him.
As we celebrate Ken's remarkable legacy, his spirit of generosity, kindness, and creativity will continue to inspire those who were touched by his life. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who cherished him.
