J.W. O'Quinn

J.W. "Jay" O'Quinn, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024, in Landrum, South Carolina, at 87. Born on May 11, 1937, in Washington County, Virginia, Jay was the son of Gussie and Ellen (Prater) O'Quinn. His life was a testament to the values of love, faith, and generosity, which he embodied in every aspect of his existence.

Jay grew up in a large and loving family, which included his siblings Maxie Talbert, Lonnie O'Quinn, Toni (Gladys) Puckett, Lottie Mae Harris, Mary O'Quinn, Ruby Stone, Bobby Lee O’Quinn and Douglas O'Quinn. He was a devoted brother and a constant source of support and joy within his family. Jay's life was further enriched when he met and married the love of his life, Rachel O'Quinn, with whom he shared over 60 years of unwavering love and companionship.

Jay and Rachel built a beautiful family together, welcoming their daughters Bonnie Bettison, Debra Howard, and the late Barbara Ellen O'Quinn. Jay's role as a father was one of his greatest joys, and he instilled in his children the same values of love and faith that guided his own life. His legacy continued to grow with the addition of his grandchildren Joshua Johns, Jordan Radic, Kayla Hines, Thomas Howard, Jacob Howard, and Rodney Howard, and he was blessed to see the family expand even further with the arrival of 10 great-grandchildren.

Professionally, Jay was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He spent many years as a skilled cement finisher and railroad worker. His commitment to his craft was evident in his long-standing membership with Labor Local 329, where he proudly served for 57 years. Jay's colleagues and friends within the association will remember him as a man of integrity and resilience.

Beyond his work, Jay had a passion for the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, finding solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His garden was a place of pride and pleasure, where he spent countless hours nurturing the soil and plants. However, Jay's favorite pastime was spending time with his family, where he was always the heart of laughter and love at gatherings.

Those who knew Jay would describe him as a loving and faith-filled man. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His presence brought comfort and warmth to all around him, and his unwavering faith was a source of inspiration to many.
