Josephine Rose DeMonico, affectionately known by all as Nonny, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, at the age of 86 in Greenville, SC. Born on February 28, 1939, in New Haven, CT, Nonny was a beacon of joy and warmth in the lives of all who knew her.
Nonny's early years in New Haven were filled with the love and camaraderie of a large Italian-American family. She was a cherished sister to her late brother Leo Scillia and his wife Marie, her brother William Scillia and his wife Kay, and her sisters Helen Tancreti with her husband Leo, and Suzanna Graham with her husband Dee. Nonny's life was a testament to enduring love, exemplified by her devoted marriage to her late husband, Dominic Frank DeMonico, with whom she shared a lifetime of cherished memories.
Nonny's nurturing spirit shone brightly through her role as a mother to her son Dominic Pasquale DeMonico and her daughter Annmarie Carlona. She carried this same love and dedication into the lives of her grandchildren, Andre G. Lavallee and Cameron J. DeMonico, and was overjoyed to witness the growth of her great-grandchildren, Axiel and Lilith Rivera. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to flourish in their hearts.
Throughout her life, Nonny was known for her sense of humor, her generous spirit, and her vivacious personality. She spent many years as a talented baker, filling the hearts and homes of her loved ones with the sweet aroma of her delicious treats. Her role as a homemaker was one she held with pride, and she later retired with the satisfaction of having raised her grandchildren, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Nonny's interests were as vibrant and diverse as her personality. She was a passionate gardener, finding solace and joy in the beauty of nature. Her love for cooking was more than a hobby; it was a way of connecting with others, as she believed in feeding everyone with both food and kindness. Bird watching brought tranquility to her days, while her Great Dane, Pepper, was a loyal companion who shared in her spirited adventures.
Volunteering was another avenue through which Nonny gave back to the community, always eager to lend a helping hand and share her boundless energy. Her laughter and light-heartedness were infectious, and those fortunate enough to have known her will remember her funny anecdotes and the warmth of her presence.
A long-time friend of over 40 years, Sheila Connely—fondly known as Mrs. C.—was a cherished confidante and partner in laughter. Their friendship was a testament to Nonny's ability to form deep and lasting bonds with those around her.
Nonny's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, laughter, and selfless generosity. She approached every day with a spirited zeal that inspired everyone she met. Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched with her kind heart and through the memories cherished by her family and friends.
Nonny's family will hold a Memorial Service Tuesday, March 11, 2025 from 12-2pm at Cremation society of SC-Westville Funerals, 6010 White Horse Rd., Greenville, SC 29611. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as her spirit continues to guide and uplift those she loved.
