Joseph Johnson Vaughn III passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday morning, October 7, 2021, after a courageous battle with liver disease.
Born in Greenville on December 25, 1943, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Johnson Vaughn II and Belle Madolyn Thrailkill Vaughn.
Joe was a graduate of Carolina High School and attended both Clemson University and Gardner Webb University. Joe developed subdivisions throughout South Carolina, primarily in Charleston, but returned to his beloved Greenville for his retirement. A sweet and gentle man, Joe was known for his quick wit, incredible sense of humor, and compassion for others. He always greeted everyone with "Wha'cha got me?" He loved entertaining, cooking, hunting, and fishing and only ventured on the golf course when his wife, Wanda, made him! He was a loyal friend to all and had a heart as big as the universe. Joe loved his dogs and could always be found with one by his side, most recently his beloved Labrador Retriever Grace Ann. He loved beach music, shagging, classic cars, and always caught attention with his sparkling blue eyes and that contagious smile! His integrity and generosity knew no bounds. He was a prince of a man.
Our hearts are broken at his passing, but we are left with precious memories of this fine man. Cherishing his memory is his wife, and the love of his life, Wanda Hughes Vaughn, son Joseph Johnson Vaughn IV, stepson Gregory Cordell and wife Courtney (Griffin and Kylie), stepson Todd Cordell and wife Kathy (Blake and Kasey), niece and nephews, and a close-knit group of cousins. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his son, George Forrest Vaughn, and his sister Lucy Ann Vaughn Shearin.
The family is grateful for the care of Open Arms Hospice and especially Del Foster. We find strength in knowing he is resting in peace with our Lord. Abiding by his wishes, a private family service will be held. A Celebration Of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at View Point at Buckhorn Creek (3411 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC 29609) from 1:00-4:00. Family requests in lieu of flowers that Memorials be made to Brookwood Church, Missions Fund.
