Jon Thomas Willinger

June 14, 1940 — October 26, 2023

Jon Thomas Willinger passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023, in Greenville, SC. Born on June 14, 1940, in Toledo, OH, Jon was a sharp-witted, funny, and kind man who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him, but especially strangers.

Jon was survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Carol L. Willinger. He was a proud father to his daughter, Kirsten (Darrell) Collins, and son, Kirk Willinger. Jon also held a special place in his heart for his stepchildren, Kristin (Mike Wilson) Ledbetter and Matthew (Kelly) Dixon. He was a cherished brother to Mary Sue (Bob) Basalya, Kim (LuAnn), Mike (Patti) Willinger, and Rick (Susan) Willinger. Jon's legacy will continue to live on through his beloved grandchildren, Jake Willinger, Libby and Jake Dixon and Ashby Ledbetter and his many nieces and nephews.

Jon was a graduate of Libby high school, and while his formal education may have ended there, his thirst for knowledge and understanding never ceased. He loved playing the violin. But he was a man of many interests, he held a particular fondness for cold beer and the Colts (and also the Bengals). He loved betting on the ponies at River Downs and Churchill Downs. His love for these pastimes was infectious, and he was always ready to share a drink, a story, and a day at the game or races with friends and family.

Those who knew Jon will remember him for his quick wit. He also had a knack for making people feel seen and laugh, this made him a natural salesman as he could connect with anyone. His sense of humor was one of his most endearing qualities. Jon was also a kind man, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement. His kindness was not limited to his family and friends; he was known to extend it to strangers as well, making him a beloved figure in his community.

Jon's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. But his spirit, his humor, and his kindness will live on in the memories we shared with him. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life, remembering the joy he brought into our lives. Jon Thomas Willinger will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him.
