On Thursday, January 31, 2019, Johnny Crawford, loving husband and father of five children, passed away at the age of 81.
Johnny was born on March 17, 1937 in Greenville, SC to the late Elbert and Nobie (Cheek) Crawford. He married his loving wife, Martha Eugenia Mason Crawford, on February 2, 1953, and together they raised their four sons, Mike, David, Tony and Joe, and one daughter, Tammy.
Johnny was a truck driver for his entire career. He loved his work, and earned the 4 Million Mile Safe Driver Award before his retirement. He loved many different kinds of music, from Country and Bluegrass to Celtic. He played bagpipes with The Piedmont Highlanders Pipe Band for many years, and family time was spent on countless evenings on the porch with his children and friends playing Bluegrass and Country music. He sang beautifully and played his guitar, and passed on to his children the love of making music. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage, and belonged to both Clan Lindsay USA, where he served as Vice President, and The Saint Andrews Society of Upper South Carolina.
Johnny was predeceased by his parents and two of his sons, Johnny Michael Crawford and Anthony Kevin Crawford, whom he couldn't wait to see at Heaven's gate. He is survived by his loving wife Martha, his sons David and Joseph (Carolyn), his daughter Tamara Sawyer (Donald), six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and three daughters-in-law, Judy, Susie and Kathy.
Services will be held at a later date.
He will be missed beyond words by all who loved him.
Epitaph On My Ever Honoured Father - Robert Burns
O ye whose cheek the tear of pity stains,
Draw near with pious rev'rence, and attend!
Here lie the loving husband's dear remains,
The tender father, and the gen'rous friend;
The pitying heart that felt for human woe,
The dauntless heart that fear'd no human pride;
The friend of man-to vice alone a foe;
For "ev'n his failings lean'd to virtue's side.
