John Reuben Maples, 98, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 18, 2018. He was born in Sevierville, Tennessee to the late Andrew Edmond Maples and the late Myrtle Lee Smith Maples.
He is survived by his brother, Tom Maples, grandson, Danny(Nora) White, granddaughter, Jane(Ron) Brookshire, and great grandchildren Hannah, Ethan, Luke, Lydia, Jamie, Ian, Phillip, Erik, Noel, Christine, and Anders. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Frank White and granddaughter-in-law, Ann White, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth of 46 years, his wife Doris of 19 years, daughters Myrtle Jane White and Val Maples, brothers Robert, Frank, and Herman, sisters, Anna May and Mary Lee, grandson, Jonathan White, great grandson Little Danny White, and granddaughter-in-law, Jenny White.
John was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the Army from January 22, 1942 to November 3, 1945. He was an expert loom fixer having worked in various mills, retiring from J.P. Stevens. He attended Holmes Memorial Church as long as his health allowed.
John R. Maples lived a long and full life. He never met a stranger and was loved and admired by many. He was always quick to speak or sing about his love for His Lord. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth; Yes says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours: and their works do follow them.” (Revelation 14:13)
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00 pm with a Celebration of Life, officiated by Rev. Chris Thompson, to follow on Monday, November 26, 2018 at Westville Funeral Home, 6010 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holmes Memorial Church or Holmes Bible College.
Special thanks is given to Don Woodward and also to Kim and Brian Plowden and Brianna for being John’s caregivers.
