Greenville, SC

John Calvin Hughes, a man of unwavering faith and boundless generosity, went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2024. Born on June 23, 1942, in Coeburn, VA, John's life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and selflessness that he held dear.

John graduated from Coeburn High School, Class of 61, where he played basketball and made lifelong friends. He then joined the US Airforce and had the opportunity to travel the world before he made Greenville, SC his home.

Beyond his professional achievements, John was a proud and devoted family man. He is survived by his loving daughter, Stacy Stokes (Rocky), and his son, Jonathan Hughes. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Emily Hice Anthony (Alex) and Marley Hice, who knew him as the "best gampa in the world." John also leaves behind a brother, Fred Hughes and sister Francis Culbertson of Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter Hughes and Delphia Ring Hughes as well as brothers, Walter Hughes Jr., Clifford Hughes, and a sister Betty Hughes.

John's interests were as rich and varied as his life. A huge fan of Gamecocks football, he could often be found cheering on his team with the same passion he applied to every aspect of his life. His love for the outdoors was evident in his meticulous lawn and the joy he took in cutting grass. John's spontaneous road trips to Coeburn, VA, just for a cup of coffee at the local Hardees were legendary and spoke to his love for simple pleasures and his deep connection to his roots.

Family was the cornerstone of John's world. He relished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grand dogs. His screened-in porch was his favorite place and where he took great pleasure in the company of his loved ones.

Those who knew John would describe him as a faith-filled man who lived his beliefs every day. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always the first to offer help to anyone in need. Selfless in every sense of the word, John's concern for others shone brightly, guiding his actions and inspiring those around him.

As we bid farewell to John, we celebrate a life richly lived and deeply felt. His impact on the world was as profound as the love he shared, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. John's spirit, characterized by love, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends, will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.

In honoring John's life, we remember a man who was the very embodiment of strength, integrity, and love. His journey on earth may have concluded, but his legacy will endure, a beacon of light for all who follow in his footsteps. Rest in peace, John, knowing that your life was a masterpiece of your own making, and your memory will be treasured forever.
