John H. Dempsey Jr.

John H. Dempsey Jr., affectionately known as Johnny, passed away peacefully on the 4th of February, 2025, at the age of 76 in Greer, SC. Born on March 4, 1948, in Spartanburg, SC, Johnny epitomized the values of loyalty, humor, and selflessness throughout his life.

Johnny was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Frances Dempsey, for 54 wondrous years. A family man at his core, he was a proud father to his daughters, Samantha Barrett (husband Jason) and Ashley Darmer. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Gabriel Nunez, Aidan Nunez, Aleah Barrett, Emma Barrett, Andrew Barrett, Fallon Mitchell, Kaleah, and Marcus, and he was overjoyed to be a great-grandfather to Ember and Ryver Hawkins. His sisters, Carole Banton (husband Bush), Shelly Brewer (husband Michael), Kelly Craig, and Lisa Skelton (husband Tommy Sutherland), will fondly remember his unwavering support and the laughter he provided at family gatherings.

Johnny’s commitment to his country was evident, having served valiantly as a 1st Sergeant in the Army for 25 years including tours in Vietnam and Korea. Following his military career, he dedicated 22 years of service as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service. His love for his community was paralleled only by his passion for the outdoors, spending countless hours fishing and sharing his enthusiasm for NASCAR and stock racing with friends and fellow fans.

Johnny's innate ability to bring joy to every room was a constant throughout his life. His legacy of love, a quick wit, and a selfless spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but his indomitable spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled on March 15th, 2025 at 1:00 PM at His Vineyard, 656 Arlington Rd. Greer, SC 29651.
