Johannes "Hans" Cornelis VanderKnyff

September 20, 1948 — February 7, 2025

Greenville, SC

Johannes Cornelis VanderKnyff, known affectionately to friends and family as Hans, passed away on February 7, 2025, in Greenville, SC, at the age of 76. Born on September 20, 1948, in West Sumatra, Indonesia, Hans lived a life marked by love, laughter, and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

Hans's journey brought him to California at the age of eight, where he met and married his first wife, Brenda, who predeceased him. Together, they welcomed two sons, Christopher and Jeremy, who were the pride of his life. After Brenda's passing, Hans found love again with Susan Kirton, who became a cherished wife and partner. His family grew to include a daughter-in-law, Stephanie, and two adored grandsons, Brendan and Jonah. Hans was a beloved brother to Jack, Rick, and Joanne Steinberg, and his extended family and friends will deeply miss his presence.

Hans served in the US Army during the Vietnam era. After his military service, he contributed to the development of California's first nuclear power plants, a testament to his intelligence and pioneering spirit. A lifelong creative soul with a passion for words and art, he ultimately found fulfillment in a career as a writer and editor, working for the University of South Carolina and as a freelancer.

Later in life Hans rediscovered his love of drawing and painting, and he found inspiration for his work from the many international trips he took with Susan. His intelligence was evident to all who knew him, but it was his sense of humor that often left the most lasting impression. Hans had a unique ability to find the funny in the everyday, and his laughter was infectious.

Hans's life was one of meaningful connections and enduring contributions. His legacy is one of a loving, funny, and intelligent man who made the world a better place simply by being in it. His family takes comfort in knowing that his spirit will live on in the stories they share and the memories they cherish.

As we bid farewell to Hans, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His was a life that touched many, and his absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Hans will be remembered not just for what he accomplished, but for who he was—a remarkable human being who made a lasting impact on the hearts of those around him.
