Joanne Jacob (Wampole), 88, formerly of Allentown, PA, died on February 9, 2023 at Prisma Medical Center, Greenville, SC. She was born in Allentown on January 13, 1935, the second of two children born to the late Lillian and Calvin Wampole.
Joanne is survived by her sons, Sereno Jacob of Allentown PA, Dr. Thorpe Jacob of Greenville, SC and Merritt Jacob of New Ringgold PA; granddaughters, Kathleen Jacob, Ann Jacob, Haleigh Jacob; and grandsons, Alex Manescu, Thorpe Jacob and Allen Jacob; as well her three nephews, Randy Wampole, Judson Wampole and Glenn Wampole. Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Sereno Jacob; her parents, and her brother, Glenn Wampole.
Over the years, she enjoyed reading, writing poetry, traveling, hiking, needlepoint, knitting and music.
Joanne graduated from Allentown High School in 1952. Following high school she attended Allentown Nursing School and received her RN in 1954. In the early years of her career, she worked at hospitals in Allentown and Philadelphia, and spent the summers traveling to beach communities along the east coast.
Upon her marriage, she and her husband, Sereno, settled in New York City, where she worked at St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village, NY. Later she moved back to Allentown with her family where she worked at Allentown Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit for over thirty years until her retirement in 1997.
Following retirement Joanne and her husband moved to Addison, ME. During her retirement she traveled extensively visiting much of Europe, along with trips to Iceland, South America and Northern Africa. When not traveling she attended the University of Maine at Machias Senior College. There she took a wide range of courses ranging from Calculus to Poetry, as well as Film and Art Appreciation. She volunteered with the local food bank and was active in her church, St. Aiden’s Episcopal Church in Machias, ME, where she made many dear friends and led an active social life.
