She was the cherished daughter of the late Marion Pinckney (Chatfield), step daughter of the late John Pinckney and was surrounded by siblings who predeceased her: Janet LeGeyt, Beverley MacLachlan, and Larry Briggs. Her life was further enriched by her sister, Linda Pilote, who remains to honor Joan's memory.

On November 6, 1971, Joan married the love of her life, David McGonigal, marking the beginning of a journey filled with shared dreams and mutual support. Together, they created a family that became Joan's pride and joy. She was a guiding star to her children, Jennifer Marinaro, Jeremy McGonigal, and Matthew McGonigal. Her love extended to her future daughter-in-law, Marisa Jaworski, and she was a cherished grandmother to Daniel and Nikolas Marinaro; Caitlyn, Anthony, Camron, Austin, and Cody McGonigal; Alex Berthaut; Jeremee Burgos; Gabe Resendes; Ashley Bagot; and Kalum McIntoch.

Joan's professional life was marked by her role as an Executive Assistant for Colliers International, where her intelligence and friendly demeanor made her a respected figure. She retired in 2016 and relocated to South Carolina, where she embraced a life of leisure and creativity.

A woman of many interests, Joan found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid crafter, with a particular talent for crocheting, cross-stitching, and creating beautiful Diamond Art pieces by hand. Her creations were not just displays of her skill but also expressions of her love, often gifted to those she held dear.
