Jim Maynard Tanquary, a beloved patriarch and friend, passed away peacefully on February 11,2025, in Greenville, SC, at the age of 93. Born on September 12, 1931, in Columbus, GA, heled a life defined by a deep-rooted faith, love for his family, hard work and service to his community. He proudly graduated from Georgia Southwestern College and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), served in the U.S. Army and Georgia National Guard, and had a successful 35 year career at AT&T in accounting and data processing, primarily residing in Pleasantville, NY and New Providence, NJ.
Outside of work, Jim enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife, Doris, and their children, especially on cherished camping vacations, and was active in scouting. After retiring in 1987 to Hendersonville, NC, he became a dedicated hiker and trail maintenance volunteer at Pisgah National Forest where his name is engraved on a sign honoring his 23 years of service. Jim and Doris became avid square dancers, holding positions in their square dance club, and traveled extensively in their RV throughout the U.S. In 2010, they relocated to The Woodlands at Furman in Greenville, SC. After Doris passed away, Jim met his second wife, Lonnie. Together, they enjoyed traveling, attending their churches and activities within the Woodlands community.
Jim was an active member of his Presbyterian churches where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon and elder. His commitment to daily devotions with his family, spouses and in his own spiritual life was inspirational. At the time of his death, Jim was a devoted member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Travelers Rest. SC.
Jim is survived by his children; Teresa Sutton, Amy Morgan ( Ed), and Allan Tanquary (Margarita); his grandchildren, Lee Sutton (Alexis), Logan Dix (Elliott), Eddie Morgan (Alyssa), Jaime Morgan, Nick Tanquary (Sarah), and Marisa Tanquary; great-grandson, Austin Morgan; best friend & brother-in-law, Tommy Wilson; niece, Charlotte and nephew, Tom; and his step- children, Robert, Joe and Michelle Stadler. He was predeceased by his parents; Lela and Bill Tanquary; sister, Shelia Wilson; his first wife, Doris, of 56 years; and second wife, Lonnie Stadler, of 9 years.
His friendly demeanor and very thoughtful nature were hallmarks of a life well-lived. His marriages and family were the highlights of his life, and he leaves behind a family and community that deeply appreciated his steadfast presence. Jim will be greatly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Camelia Room at The Woodlands at Furman. A private interment with Military Honors will follow the next day at the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church Building Fund in Travelers Rest, SC or the U.S. Forest Service - Pisgah Ranger District.
