James Carl Bendig, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away on July 18, 2024, in Simpsonville, South Carolina. Born on May 8, 1938, in Buffalo, New York, Jim's life was a testament to his faith-filled, courageous, and spirited nature. He was a beacon of light and love to all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire those he has left behind.

Jim was a devoted husband to Carol Ann Leneberg Bendig and a loving father to his daughter Deborah Lang (Keith) and his son David Bendig. His grandchildren, Rachael Anderson (Adam), Regan Majerle (Jason), Brady, Bryce, and Brynn Bendig, brought immense joy to his life. Predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Ida Sheehan Bendig, his brother William Bendig, and his sister Doris Bendig, Jim's memory will be cherished and kept alive by his family.

Jim's academic pursuits led him to earn a Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary, a foundation that would underpin his lifelong commitment to serving others. His calling was evident in his work as a chaplain in the United States Air Force, from which he retired with honor. Jim's passion for ministry continued as he pastored a church in Lawrenceville, Ohio, and later as he took on the role of Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity in Traverse City, Michigan. His dedication to community service was further exemplified in his role as Assistant Pastor of the First Congregational Church.

A natural leader, Jim served as President of the Lake Leelanau Lake Association, where he worked tirelessly to ensure the preservation and enjoyment of the lake for future generations. His commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement was unwavering and deeply respected by all who worked alongside him.

Jim's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. He found solace and pleasure in yard work, embracing the tranquility and beauty of nature. His greatest passion, however, was sharing God's love wherever he served, whether through his ministry, his community work, or simply in his daily interactions with others. Jim's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them, instilling in them the values of kindness, compassion, and faith.

Those who knew Jim would describe him as a man of great faith and integrity. He approached life with a courageous spirit, never shying away from challenges and always ready to lend a helping hand. His spirited demeanor was contagious, and he had the unique ability to uplift and encourage everyone he met.

Jim Bendig's life was a journey of service, love, and unwavering faith. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable impact he had on the lives of so many. His memory will be treasured in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
