Jack "Darrin" Oates

Jack Darrin Oates, known affectionately as Darrin to his friends and family, passed away at his home in Greenville, SC, on June 17, 2024. Born on February 27, 1966, in Kenton, Ohio, Darrin was a man of deep faith, intelligence, and thoughtfulness, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Darrin was the beloved husband of Tisha Cole Oates, and a devoted father to his two children, Jack Michael Oates and Calista Frances Oates. He was the cherished son of Connie Glock Oates and the late Jack Rudolph Oates, and a caring brother to Amy Oates Hoge (Todd). His life was further blessed with the joy of being an uncle to Trent and Shelby Hoge. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Vera and Earl Glock, and Edna and Frank Sr. Oates.

A proud alumnus of Kettering University, formerly known as GMI, Darrin earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. During Darrin's attendance at Kettering University/GMI, he was actively involved in his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. He furthered his education at NC State University, where he obtained a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering. Darrin's professional life was marked by dedication and innovation, particularly during his tenure as a business project leader and subsystem manager with General Electric's renewable energy business. His earlier career at Rockwell International with Heavy Truck Drive Components was distinguished by his contribution to 27 design patents, a testament to his ingenuity and expertise.

Darrin's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He cherished time spent with his family, whether it was hiking, grilling, camping, fishing, or simply enjoying each other's company. An avid sports enthusiast, Darrin was actively involved in his children's sports and activities, coaching youth baseball and sharing his love for the game. His passion for sports extended to being a lifetime supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. Darrin was also a lifetime golfer, and he enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, and playing basketball.

Beyond his personal hobbies, Darrin was a mentor to many young engineers, generously sharing his knowledge and experience to guide the next generation in their careers. His legacy as a mentor is one that will continue to influence the field for years to come.

Darrin's life was a reflection of his faith-filled spirit. He approached every challenge with grace and every success with humility. His thoughtful nature made him a confidant and friend to many, and his intelligence was matched only by his kindness.
