Jack Gilchrist Carson passed away on July 8, 2024, in Greenville, SC, with his wife of 57 years, Karen, by his side. His kind and gentle spirit will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.

Jack was born in Muskogee, OK on June 18, 1945. His early life experiences developed his lifelong love of music and dedication to helping others. After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Education at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, OK, he volunteered to serve his country for three years in the US Army, including a combat tour during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service continued throughout his life. 

Following his military service, Jack began a successful career as a high school Vocal Music Director, in Coffeyville, KS. He inspired students with his passion for music and his ability to connect with young people. Utilizing his background in education, he began a 35-year career as the Director of Human Resources with several international companies. These responsibilities sent Jack to various countries & cultures. He was an esteemed leader who respected each person as a unique individual.

After retirement, Jack continued to share his time and talents with the community. He became a popular "reading buddy" to elementary school children and in doing so encouraged a love for reading and learning to the next generation. Jack also volunteered with the United Ministries' "Employment Readiness" program, where he trained clients in successful interviewing skills which helped them achieve jobs and productive lives.

Jack's life was full of love for his family, his church, and his many interests. He was a devoted husband to Karen, a loving father to his daughter Kristi and her husband Jody Neef, and his son Sean and his wife Melody Carson. His grandchildren, Nathan Neef, Jessica Neef, and Mark Stringer, brought him immeasurable joy and pride. His love also lives on through his extended family, Brian and Nancy Bauer, and nephews Matthew, Andrew, Michael Bauer and their families.

Jack has been preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Barbara Carson, and his grandparents, Harry and Jenny Grunwald. 

Jack's enthusiasm for life was evident in his diverse interests. He loved music and was a talented musician. Enjoying the magic and wonder of storytelling, Jack found joy in all things Disney. His fascination with space, space travel, and science fiction spoke to his adventurous spirit and quest for knowledge. A fan of auto racing, Jack shared his excitement and passion with friends and family alike. His love for animals was yet another expression of his caring nature.

Faith was significant in Jack’s life. Baptized and confirmed as a Lutheran, he shared his gift of leadership and music. He served in many congregations through the years as President, Elder and Council member. He also directed vocal and hand-bell choirs in various congregations. Belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were a sure and guiding force for him. 

Those who knew Jack would describe him as faith-filled, generous and having an engaging sense of humor. His charisma drew people from all walks of life, and he never missed an opportunity to inspire his family, students and co-workers to strive for their best. 

Jack Carson's life was a journey of joy, service, and unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. As we remember his life and those he touched, he will live on in all of our hearts. Jack's motto was to “Always do your best”, to cherish our loved ones, and to embrace life with open arms with a song in our hearts.

Based on Jack’s illness, his brain was donated for research to Brain Support Network and Lewy Body Dementia Association. 

A memorial service will be held at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1601 N. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC 29609 on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 11 o’clock.

Memorials may be given to The Gardens at Eastside Employee Fund, 275 Commonwealth Drive, Greenville, SC 29615 or to Wren Hospice, 955 West Wade Hampton Blvd., Suite 3A, Greer, SC 29650.
