Hubert H. " Hugh " Hopkins, II

June 23, 1942 — January 11, 2019

Hubert H. Hopkins, 76, of Simpsonville, SC, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his loved ones on January 11, 2019. Preceding him in death are his father, Hubert H. Hopkins I, mother, Ella Noe Hopkins, siblings Lola Belle (Gaye), Shirley, James (Alison) and Huberta(Cookie). Hugh was loved by his son, Joseph Hopkins, daughters, Lisa Schadt, Allyson Hopkins, Victoria Hopkins and Abigail Hopkins, his 7 grandchildren, David Schadt, Bryan Schadt, Jeffrey Schadt, Dustin Gray, Hannah Craig, Emily Mulkey, Ella Hopkins and great grandchildren Bryson Schadt, Lily Schadt, Calvin Schadt and Loryn Gray and many other family and friends.

Hugh was born in Seabrook Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C. and joined the United States Navy at 17 years of age. Hugh loved his country and was retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with multiple decorations and awards. To quote his commanding officer “Hugh has made outstanding contributions towards forming the Navy of the future”. Hugh was one of the first to enter the Navy Counsel rating and become a Counselor to which Admiral Zumwalt wrote him personally thanking and recognizing Hugh for the quality of his work in this field. Hugh served on several naval vessels such as the Forrestal (twice) the Independence, the Detroit and the Roosevelt.
Hugh loved the Navy and was a life long member of the VFW and a member of the Lions Club. Hugh had several businesses throughout his life including Shore Meadows Market, General Lee’s Chicken, Crown Victory Automotive as well as several others. Hugh loved cars and drag racing was one of his true passions.

Hugh truly valued his family most, he cherished each one of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a kind and generous man and a true touchstone of his family. We celebrate the great life of a truly great man. Anchors away Chief.

Memorial services to remember and honor Hugh's life will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 18, 2019 in the Chapel of the Cremation Society of South Carolina - Westville Funerals, 6010 White Horse Road, Greenville, South Carolina. Officiating the services will be Chaplain Sarah Williams with Homestead Hospice in Greenville. The South Carolina Region of the United States Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion in Greenville will provide Military Honors. A gathering of Hugh's family and friends will follow the services at the funeral home.

Our family wants to say a special thank you to the Homestead team for their care and it is that care that allowed him to live out the remainder of his life with nothing but love.
