Harvey Edward Smith III,72, passed away Monday, February 1, 2021, at Prisma Memorial Hospital, Greenville, South Carolina after a 6-month battle with end-stage renal disease and melanoma. At the time he was living in Fairplay, South Carolina where he had retired.
Ed was born in Anderson, Indiana on March 19, 1948, the only child of Lula Mae Finnimore Smith and Harvey Edward Smith, Jr. As a child, Ed contracted polio and spent time in an iron lung. Overcoming this challenge, he graduated high school and went on to college. He attended Ball State and Indiana University, graduating from Indiana University. He played football at both Ball State and Indiana and played in the Rose Bowl. Ed owned advertising businesses for decades and retired from his advertising business in Florida several years ago to retire to Fairplay, South Carolina.
In addition to football, Ed’s passions in life included music, motorcycles, dogs, and sailing. He bred and showed Doberman Pinchers.
He is predeceased by his parents, his daughter, and his first wife.
Ed did not want to call hours. Arrangements were made through the Cremation Society of SC - Westville Funerals.
