Harriette Weaver Chavis Miller

January 14, 1937 — January 18, 2018

Harriette Weaver Chavis Miller “HAPPY”, 81, of 16 Capewood Court, Greenville, South Carolina passed away January 18 , 2018 at Southern Oaks Residential Care in Greenville. She was born on Jan 14, 1937 in Columbia, SC to the late Franklin Wilson Weaver and Ruby Warr Plummer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William Andrew Chavis and Edward Hensley Miller, Sr. , and her sister, Linda Weaver Vaughn.
Happy grew up in the Olympia Community in Columbia, SC and remained in touch with her many friends there until her illness several years ago. She graduated from University High School on the Campus of the University of South Carolina. She married her first husband, Willie Chavis, who was employed with Western Electric Company soon after her graduation and they lived in Columbia and Lexington, SC and Charlotte, NC before finally settling in Greenville. They also lived in Florence, SC in the early seventies before returning to Greenville in 1972. Happy was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in High School, and she attended and volunteered with their many team efforts and activities. Happy loved being around people, and enjoyed working, volunteering and staying busy. She was employed by Byrd Furniture Company, The Cancer Center of The Carolinas, Garrison Optical, and retired from the Jervey Eye Group. Widowed at age 41, she later married Ed Miller, Sr., who was the Superintendent of Paris Mountain State Park. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, was a Circle leader there, a Confirmation Instructor, was on the Friendly Visitors and Bereavement Dinners Committees, and delivered Meals On Wheels. She was also a member of the Lois Russell Garden Club and served as one of its presidents.
After her retirement, she visited the homebound regularly and drove her elderly friends to their appointments and to church. Always mindful of the needs of others, she participated in a 5-year STAR Breast Cancer Study for non-cancer patients, and donated untold gallons of blood through the Blood Connection. While she worked at the Cancer Center, she began handing out Angel Medallions to those who needed prayer. This was brought to the attention of Robbie Goodall Boman, Author of Miracles of the Upstate, and Happy was included in the 22nd Chapter of her book as “The Angel Giver.”
Mrs. Miller is survived by her 2 children, Glenn A Chavis (Carol), Judith Chavis Jordan (Bill), her 12 grandchildren Grayson Chavis, Drew Postal(Dargan), Gus Postal, Banks Chavis, William Postal, Walter Whisenhunt, William Jordan(Meredith), Kyle Whisenhunt, Hannah Jordan, Connor Whisenhunt, Kiep Jordan, and Molly Jordan, and 4 great-grandchildren, Abby, Lucas, Zoey, Louise and her siblings Frankie Lynn Weaver "Butch" of Taylors, SC and James Clifton Weaver of Myrtle Beach, SC.
A Memorial Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2600 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Greenville, SC 29615 on Friday, January 26, at 11:00. The family will be receiving friends and loved ones for lunch immediately following the service.
Happy’s family would like to give a special thank you to the loving staff at Southern Oaks for the kindness and caring shown to our beloved Mother and Grandmother. Their compassion will not be forgotten. We would also like to thank the many friends who have helped us in so many ways on this journey.
