Gilbert Commodore Crouse Jr.

Gilbert Commodore Crouse, Jr., a long-time resident of Greenville, SC, passed away on December 12th, 2023 at the age of 80 after a brief hospital stay. Gil was born in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in nearby Washington Court House, graduating from Washington High School in 1961 as a standout athlete and scholar. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1965, where he played football, and serve as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam.

Gil moved to Pittsburgh, PA after the Navy, where he married Margaret “Peggy” Mingle, had two children, and was plant manager at Continental Can Company. He remained a lifelong, avid Steelers fan. In 1981, Gil and Peggy became restaurateurs on Hilton Head Island, SC after purchasing “The Patio” at the Island Club. He continued to live on Hilton Head for many years after selling the restaurant and became engineering maintenance manager of Marriott Vacation Club resorts on the island. In 1997, he moved to The Bahamas to be resort general manager of Marriott’s Paradise Island Beach Club. Gil greatly enjoyed working with the friendly Bahamian people. After returning to the states in 2001, Gil and Peggy relocated to Greenville, SC and co-managed Westminster retirement community, where they had many fond memories of the residents. He joined Management Recruiters of Greenville in 2005 and specialized in engineering recruitment until earlier this year.

Gibby loved his Lord, his family, his friends, his country, his vegetable garden, and South Carolina Lake Russell fishing. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Margaret “Peggy” Crouse, daughter Lora Crouse, brother Robert “Bob” (Nancy) Crouse of WCH, OH, and pet cat Trouble. He was preceded in death by his father Gilbert C. Crouse, Sr., mother Margaret H. Crouse, and son Luke Crouse. He is greatly missed by family and friends alike. Anchors aweigh.
