Gere Lawrence Ablett, known affectionately as Gere or Butch died peacefully on October 6, 2023, in Spartanburg, S.C.Born on June 15, 1944, in Anna, IL. Gere lived a life full of love, service, and dedication to his family, his community, and his faith.
Gere was the beloved husband of Diane Ablett and the proud father of Michael (Kim) Ablett and Thomas (Allison) Ablett. He was the cherished brother of James (Carol) Ablett and Nancy (Bill) Holt. Gere was predeceased by his parents, James and Earlene Ablett. He was uncle to three nephews, one niece, a grandnephews, and a grandniece. His family was his pride and joy and he treasured his sons above all else.
Gere graduated from Dongola, IL. High School in 1962 and went on to graduate from Alexian Brothers School of Nursing in Chicago, IL. in 1965. He served his country in the US Navy Nurse Corp from 1968 to 1970 in Millington, TN where he was responsible for nursing care of injured service men and two rehabilitation wards for returning Viet Nam soldiers. Gere transitioned to long-term care administration in 1971 dedicating his career to improving the quality of life for those entrusted to his care. He worked in Petoskey, MI for nine years before moving to Saginaw, MI. He worked for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan as administrator of Luther Manor Nursing Home. He was the founder of the Saginaw Area Health Care Administrators, Inc. and Scholarship Program. He was the recipient of many service awards over the years. He moved to Spartanburg, S.C. in 1999 where he worked at Skylyn Place NH until his retirement.
Gere was a man of many interests and deeply involved in his community. In Petoskey, he was active in the Jaycees and a founding member of the Auxiliary Police. He was active in his church, contributing significantly to the building of Springs of Grace Lutheran Church in Inman, S.C. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was known for his readiness to help anyone in need.
One of Gere's most cherished possessions was his 1965 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, which he painstakingly restored to its original state. This labor of love earned him many trophies and it will continue to be cared for by his son, Michael.
Gere lived his life with purpose, passion, and a profound love for family and community. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
His memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Springs of Grace Lutheran Church 320 Holden Drive Inman, S.C. with a meal to follow. The interment of his ashes will occur on October 28, 2023, in the American Legion Cemetery in Dongola, IL. Memorials may be made to Springs of Grace Lutheran Church property and building fund.
