Geraldine Morton Sponaas died on March 9, 2015 at NHC Mauldin. Geri was born March 15, 1922 in Muskegon, Michigan, and was the last surviving child of Benjamin and Mildred (Whelpley) Morton. She was the widow of Magnus Sponaas, whom she married in 1940. After raising their family in Muskegon, she and Magnus lived in Mobile, Alabama for nine years before retiring to Anna Maria Island, Florida. Geri moved to the Greenville area in 2002 to be with family.
Noted for her humor and zest for life, Geri devoted herself to making a warm, loving home, played the organ, took flying lessons from her husband, became an excellent china painter, grew prize-winning orchards, and was active in her church and community until heath issues curtailed her activities.
Geri is survived by sons Richard Sponaas (Susan) of Mauldin, South Carolina, and William Sponaas (Linda) of Gainesville, Georgia, grandchildren Jeffery (Laura), Jonathan, Erik (Alison), and David Sponaas, Julie McDonald, Samantha Cantrell (Bradley), Geri Lynn Mullis (Marcus), and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will be available for greeting on Saturday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the Son Room of Mauldin United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the main sanctuary. A private interment service will be held at a later date in Muskegon, Michigan. The family appreciates the excellent care, support and prayers of NHC Mauldin, Caris Healthcare, and her church family.
