George Walter Thornton

April 11, 1943 — September 6, 2021

George Walter Thornton, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 78 on September 6th, 2021. He lived in Taylors, SC. He was born in Selma, AL on April 11, 1943. George was the son of Dewey and Virginia Thornton.

He was a proud member of the United States Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, he went on to study Business at the University of Alabama where he graduated in 1972. There began his lifelong love of Alabama football. Roll Tide Roll!

George was dedicated to his work at Fluor Corporation as a Director of Human Resources. He loved people and took great pride in being able to help those he worked with further their careers. George always wanted people to feel that they worked with him rather than for him. Through his work at Fluor he developed many close friendships.

After a long career with Fluor, he retired in 2013. George then discovered a passion for woodworking and often shared his creations with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren, Oakley and Keira, who kept him young at heart and brought him so much joy throughout the years.

George is survived by his loving wife Cheryl Cieri Thornton, daughters Amy Thornton Snipes (Jon), Teresa Thornton, and Gina Luke (Liz), grandchildren Oakley & Keira Snipes, and Jeremy Libert. He was predeceased by his beloved son Michael Thornton and grandson Samuel McCall Snipes.
