George Clinton Johnson, 92, died on September 24, 2023, in Greenville, SC.
Born on December 25, 1930, in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of George and Anna Johnson, who preceded him in death.
At the age of 10, he met the love of his life, Jean Johnson, and they were married in 1951, spending 71 years together.
George was a proud United States Soldier, serving 22 years in the US Army from 1951 to 1973 in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired as a Major and was the recipient of two Bronze Star Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge, and a Parachutist Badge.
However, his proudest titles were husband, brother, father, and Poppy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother Bill (Dian) Johnson; his son Jeff (Sue) Johnson; his daughter Karen Richardson; his grandchildren Greg (Erica) Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Kent (Andrea) Johnson, Kristen (Kyle) Smith, Jay (Emmaleigh) Richardson, Colin (Katherine) Johnson, Clayton (Danielle) Johnson, and Landon Johnson; and his great-grandchildren Ryan Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Julian Johnson, Mia Johnson, Diego Johnson, George Smith, Ben Smith, and Cooper Richardson. He is preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kelly Johnson; his grandchildren Amy Johnson and Brent Johnson; and his great-granddaughter Gabriela Johnson.
George was a member of Mauldin United Methodist Church and an active resident of Rolling Green Village, often socializing with friends in the dining room, leading games of Hand and Foot, never missing ice cream on Tuesdays and Krispy Kreme on Fridays, and winning Bingo with his favorite number (N44). When he wasn’t with friends, you could find George cheering on his favorite sports teams: the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.
A memorial will be held at Rolling Green Village on Thursday, October 12 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Upstate Warrior Solution.
