George Herman Alquist Sr. of Greenville, SC passed away January 12th, 2018 at home peacefully in his sleep. George was born December 2nd, 1931 in New Kensington, PA to Herman and Geraldine (Irvine) Alquist. He graduated from Ken Hi and served in the US Navy as a Corpsman on the USS Philippine Sea for four years. He married his high school sweet heart and the love of his life, Myrna Jane Thomas, on March 24th, 1951. He worked for Milton Hershey School in Hershey, PA for over thirty years.
George loved working outdoors, traveling, spending time with his family, and cheering for the Steelers. He always had a joke to tell and was always on the hunt for new ones. He an epic story teller and had the best stories to tell. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will miss good nature and smiles. He was truly a favorite of all who met him.
George is survived by his brother, Dennis Alquist (Flora), his sister, Betty Scanga, and his children, George Alquist Jr. (Melva), Susan Bauman (Betty Fundelawicz), Barbara Schopf (Edward), William Alquist (Ellen) and Beverly Alquist along with fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a loving extended family.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 at Cremation Society of SC / Westville Funerals, 6010 White Horse Road Greenville, SC at one o'clock in the afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his favorite charity, Wounded Warriors or Providence Care Hospice of Piedmont who cared for him with us so well.
