FREDERICK MAURICE JOHNSON
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ... For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Every so often, one will rise up among us who leaves no doubt that he was called out to do great work. So it was with Frederick (Fred) Maurice Johnson. From the time of Fred’s birth on July 28, 1964, he held a special place in the heart of everyone he ever came into contact with.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” Jeremiah 1:5 KJV
Fred was the second child of the late Frank and Gloria Johnson. His ready smile, quick wit, and contagious personality are the qualities that always drew his fellow man to him, Fred never met a stranger. He was affectionately known as “The Gentle Giant.”

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send…Then said I, Here am I; send me.” Isaiah 6:8 KJV
At an early age, Fred accepted Christ as his Savior and began his lifelong faith journey. He was a faithful member of Belle-Terrace Presbyterian Church, USA, in Augusta, GA. After relocating to Charleston, SC, he became a member of Emmanuel Christian Fellowship where he carried out the family and the community. With the expanded growth of the church, he answered the call to be a founding supporter of the Greenville, SC location. He later aligned himself with Greenville 1st Assembly of God for over 21 years.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife.” Genesis 2:24
On November 14, 1986, Fred was united in holy matrimony to Kimala Thomas. To this union, two children were born, Elizabeth and Wesley, the joy of his life.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“….if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understand.” Proverbs 2:1-2
Fred received his education in the public schools of Augusta, GA. He was a 1982 graduate of "the Billy Prince Athletic Achievement Award. He was scouted by many colleges and universities, but the college of his choice was The Citadel, where he received a full athletic scholarship. He was an All-American tight end, receiving many awards and accolades during his tenure at The Citadel. In 1986, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” 2 Thessalonians 3:10
Fred was always industrious and highly motivated. His work history began as a high school physical education teacher and football coach in the South Carolina public schools. His work career ended with Solvay Specialty Polymers where he was a Production Supervisor for over 20 years. He had a great influence with the people he worked with inspiring them to faith.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 NKJV
As a member of Greenville First Assembly of God, Fred’s passion to reach as many people as he could for Christ was evident in all of the ministries he was involved in. His ministries consisted of:
• The Prison Ministry
• Kids Church
• Leader in the Youth Ministry
• Evangelistic Prayer Ministry (Downtown Greenville)
• Church Board Member
• Miracle Heal-Men’s Rehabilitation Program
• Miracle Heal-Boys Home

Fred felt the need to expand his ministry worldwide. His missions extended to:
• Charleston, South Carolina
• Chicago, Illinois
• Alaska
• South Africa
• Costa Rica
• Panama
• Honduras
• Venezuela
• Dominican Republic
• San Antonio, Texas

Possessing a true servant’s heart, he ministered in all family occasions offering words of wisdom, comfort, and strength.

AND GOD SAID. . . .
“Well done, a good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” Matthew 25:21 KJV

On March 20, 2019, the voice of God whispered to his precious child, “Wear one – come home!” Fred answered the call of Jesus and his spirit overcame the bonds of his physical limitations.

Those left to cherish his memories are: loving children, Elizabeth Faith Johnson and Wesley Daniel Johnson, two brothers, Frank L. Johnson, and Jeffery (Leola) Johnson, and one sister, Susan (Don) Huber. Additional survivors are one aunt, Mattie B. Hill-Leslie, one uncle, Melvin (Jill) Alexander, and a host of nieces, nephews, close cousins, and a loving and supportive church family.
