Frederic James Swanson, 86, of Greenville, SC, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015.

Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, he is the son of the late Swantie and Bessie Jones Swanson.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Marie Phillips Swanson, and his son, James Frederic Swanson.  He is survived by a sister, Pat Takamatsu, and three daughters: Leslie Davis (husband Peter), Sylvia Mead (husband Jim), and Greta Duty (husband Rodney).  There are 13 living grandchildren: Bethany and Emily Davis; Alissa Mead Martin; Tyler, Cameron and Kristen Mead; Jessica and Jordan Swanson; Charles, Lauren, Christopher, Alexander, and Connor Duty.

As a member of the U.S. Army, he served his country during the Korean War.  The majority of his employment years were spent as a heavy machinery maintenance mechanic.  He worked for Kaibab Industries for many years in Eagle, Colorado and Payson, Arizona.  He worked for Hammermill Hardwoods in Pickens, South Carolina for a few years in the 1980s.   He also helped to install and maintain the cogeneration plant at Bob Jones University.

Fred loved riding his motorcycle and made trips that took him through almost all states in the contiguous US.  One of the highlights of his life was the opportunity to help for three summers with the building and maintenance needs at Beacon Bible Camp in Uranium City, Saskatchewan, Canada.

A special thank you to the staff of Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home as well as the staff of Patriot Hospice for their help and kind care of our father.

A memorial service will be held at Overbrook Gospel Chapel at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 30.
