Evelyn Benton passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024, in Landrum, South Carolina, at the age of 84. Born on September 15, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Natalia (Norma) Siden and Herman Siegel, Evelyn's life was rich in experiences and relationships, and her kind nature touched many.
Although she was born in Brooklyn, Evelyn spent most of her youth in the city she loved, the Bronx. This love was only matched by her passion for reading. Evelyn's interests varied from Crossword puzzles, to enjoying a game of bingo with friends, to playing the slot machines and thrift shopping. Throughout Evelyn's upbringing her Jewish faith helped her along the way. Evelyn's educational journey was a testament to her insatiable curiosity and desire to learn.
Her professional life was marked by a distinguished career at Saks on New York's 5th Avenue, where her sharp wit and intelligence shone brightly. Later, Evelyn later brought her talents to Dollar General in South Carolina, where she eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters, Barbara (Roger) Goldstein-Deel, Charlotte Tobias Mason, and Jaqueline (Mark) Wood. Evelyn is predeceased by her Brothers Norman (Lee) Siegel and Arthur (Bea) Siegel who shared countless memories with her throughout the years. She was also very fond of her sister in law Ethel. Her role as a grandmother to eight grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, was one she cherished deeply. Evelyn was predeceased by her first husband Leo (Vic) Tobias, and her second husband Allen Benton, her sister Rhoda Siegel, who passed before she was born, as well as her great granddaughter Kaylin Ann Langley who she loved deeply.
Her days were filled of warmth and laughter, thanks in part to her beloved fur baby, Casper, her “little buddy”. The Family would also like to thank Jan, her caregiver, for her unwavering support through everything, as well as her granddaughter Brittany.
Those who knew Evelyn will remember her as a woman of intelligence, always ready with a funny quip or a thoughtful piece of advice. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her memory will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends. As we bid her farewell, we take solace in the fact that she lived fully, laughed often, and left a legacy of warmth and wisdom that will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Evelyn's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, where her family and close friends will gather to honor her memory and the indelible mark she left on their hearts. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the ASPCA in Evelyn’s memory.
