Pastor Evan Shaffer, 93, entered into his eternal home with his Savior, Jesus Christ, at his Greenville, SC residence on Saturday, April 12, 2014.
His parents, four siblings and his first wife, Dorothy, precede him in death. His second wife and dedicated caregiver Jean, six children, two stepsons, 16 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren survive him.
Born in York County, PA, he served in the U S Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant on B 29 Super Fortresses during World War II.
Upon graduation from Bob Jones Seminary in 1951, he pastored four churches in Pennsylvania: first as an interim at Shiloh Church of the Open Door, 14 years at Exalting Christ Chapel in New Freedom (now New Freedom Baptist), Norvelt Union Church, and Dunbar Baptist.
After seeing the need for national pastors to be trained in their own countries, Pastor Shaffer embarked on a new ministry, at the age of 58, by starting a Bible Institute in Cap Haitian, Haiti, for national pastors. Soon the work progressed to the point of moving the Institute to Saint Raphael, a town in the northern region of Haiti.
After over twenty years of missionary service in Haiti, Pastor Shaffer returned to the United States for health reasons. A truly dedicated servant of the Lord, Pastor Shaffer was still able to witness to caregivers and neighbors even after the limitations of a stroke.
Several of his former Haitian students continue to faithfully pastor churches, and the work in Haiti continues under the able leadership of Tim Bower through the auspices of the Maranatha Theological Seminary.
There will be a memorial service at Hampton Park Baptist Church, Greenville, SC, at 2 PM on Saturday, June 7.
Memorial gifts to honor Pastor Shaffer may be given in his name to Maranatha Theological Seminary through Open Door Baptist Mission, 1115 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615-3603. Cremation Society of SC
