" ALWAYS LOVE "
Major Erik Michael Russell (Ret) of Greenville, South Carolina, began his eternal life November 15, 2016. Erik was a warrior in every aspect of his life. He was the epitome of a courageous leader, always giving 110% or more, both mentally and physically. He built his life with discipline, love, humility, and hard work. Anyone who met Erik could see he was a straight shooter but also an encouraging listener. His generosity and relentless passion for life allowed him to live the past 40 years to the absolute fullest. He refused to be moved or broken by his cancer, “no fear, just faith”. To describe Erik, would be perfection. From baking to self discipline, he was a warrior for his family, country, friends and his own life. His steel trap memory and devoted nature will be missed. In the words of Erik, he was a “lover not a fighter”, but when it came to his family he fought for time and memories with them.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Susan Michelle Russell, and father, Robert Arnold Walraven. Erik is survived by his wife, Courtney; son, Grady; brother, Byron Hollister and wife Mercedes of Las Cruces, NM; Scott Shimer of Sherman, TX; Robert Walraven and wife Jennifer of Las Cruces, NM; and numerous nieces & nephews.
Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, November 19, 2016 from 3-5pm at Green Lettuce, Erik’s favorite restaurant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Let There Be Mom and Upstate Warrior Solutions.
