Emily W. Phillips, 92, of Greenville, SC passed away October 11, 2022, at The Gables on Pelham care
home. Emily was born in Paducah, KY on July 12, 1930, to the late Elijah Kenneth Wolfe and Ida
Mabel Thomas Wolfe.
Emily was a graduate of Augusta Tilghman High School, Paducah, KY in 1949. She also studied
nursing at Norton Memorial Infirmary School of Nursing, Louisville, KY. Emily worked for over 10
years for physicians’ offices in Paducah. Following moves to Lexington and Frankfort, Emily and her
beloved husband Jim settled in Alexandria, VA. Throughout her years in the Washington, D.C. area,
Emily participated in community and neighborhood activities and was a steadfast supporter of her
husband in his educational and career journeys. She was never prouder than when Jim received his
Ph.D. in higher education administration in 1979. After their many travels Emily and Jim retired in
1997 in Simpsonville, SC. Emily was a charter member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church,
Simpsonville, and actively contributed to her church community.
Emily enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was an inspiration to her nieces and
nephews. She was a caregiver to members of her family both early and later in life. She remembered
details about her surviving the 1937 flood in Paducah. Emily had a keen sense of humor, and always
had a kind word for those who crossed her path.
Six nieces and nephews survive her: nephew Mike Lewis (Charlotte) of Asheville, NC; nephew Gary
Wolfe (Cindy) of The Villages, FL; niece Dorsey Johnston (Josh) of Goldfield, NV; nephew David
Stone of Yorba Linda, CA; niece Susan Pinson (Kent) of Edmond, OK; and niece Linda Stone of
Simpsonville, SC. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Clemie Wolfe of Oxford, FL. She has nine
great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother E. Kenneth Wolfe, brother William
(Bill) Wolfe, sister Nell Florence Wolfe Lewis, and husband Dr. James M. Phillips.
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 3 at the Eastminster
Presbyterian Church, Simpsonville, SC. A reception will be held at the church immediately following
the service.
