Elmer Granville Ethun, 92, of Greer, SC passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Greenville, SC. Born March 28, 1924 in Friendship, WI, the son of Marion Pease Ethun and Elmer G. Ethun. Elmer graduated from Coloma High School class of 1941. He was drafted into the army and served as a cryptographer in India and China with the Army Air Corps reaching the rank of Corporal.
Elmer married Ida Ella Van Alstine on May 22, 1948. They resided in Rockton, Illinois until 2010 when they moved to Greer, South Carolina. He worked as a machinist at Fairbanks Morse Corporation for 42 years.
Elmer was a founding member of the RockFORD A’s Model A Club and a member of the Model A Restorers Club of America. Restoring Model A’s was his passion and he was a mentor to many younger guys just getting their first Model A Ford. Each of his grandchildren were given a Model A that grandpa helped resort. He spent his retirement years golfing and restoring antique cars and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed attending the annual meeting of the Fairbanks Morse Quarter Century Club. He was also a member of the Moose Club, and American Legion.
Elmer was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ida, in December, 2013, and granddaughter, Rebekah, in 1991. Survivors include Larry James Ethun (Denise), of Rockford, IL, Lee Allen Ethun (Barbara), of Greer, SC. Grandchildren include: Mark A. Ethun (Kelly) of Decatur, GA, Steven P. Ethun (Abigail) of North Augusta, SC, Rosalie A. Sheldon (J.D.) of Hawthorne Woods, IL, Rachel Nafzinger (Timothy) of Travelers Rest, SC., and four great grandchildren.
