Betty quietly passed away in her sleep in her Greer, South Carolina home on June 8, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents Royer and Esther Pfefferle and her beloved siblings; Eleanor Bierly (Lamar), Dorothy Embleton, Lewis “Bud” Pfefferle (Dorothy, “Dottie”), Edith Darrough (John), and her husband Robert E. Ninde.
Betty was born in Columbus, Ohio. She was a graduate of Worthington High School (Class of 1946) and the Cincinnati Central Academy of Commercial Art. She worked as an advertising manager, artist for companies such as Magnavox and Gruen Watch, and later a design draftsman with top secret clearance for Rockwell International and Bell Labs. She ultimately retired from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Institute of Religion located near The Ohio State University as a secretary. She provided meals, laughter, and a shoulder to cry on for many students and adults that stepped into that building. It was the perfect venue to share her love for others.
Betty spent her life in service to others. She loved everyone and believed that people were inherently good. She was a talented artist and crafter. If she met you, she was quick to give you some item that she had made. It might be crocheted booties, a blanket, a stuffed dog or a painting. She simply wanted to make you feel special. She consistently sought out anyone that she identified as lonely or forgotten and she befriended them. She believed that everyone needed to be hugged and always offered compliments to others in an effort “to make their day”. She had “magic hands” and could massage away a migraine or back pain and freely shared her gift without hesitation if she saw that you were in pain.
She was a dedicated member of the LDS church and volunteered her many talents in countless hours in the children’s programs of the church and in numerous other capacities. She and her husband Robert raised their family in Whitehall, Ohio. She loved her family without reservation or judgment. She had no time in her life to be offended. She was too busy loving others. In 2000 she moved to South Carolina to live with her daughter’s family. She continued her church service there and was very pleased to be involved in the daily life of her grandchildren. She took up oil painting under the tutelage of a dear friend who was a Thomas Kinkade-trained artist. Betty left behind a wealth of paintings and handiwork for her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Lee J. Ninde (Mary, “Mimi”) and her daughter, Anne Ninde-Nielsen (Robert), eleven grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Private interment and public memorial service will be held in Columbus, Ohio at a later date this summer.
Betty appreciated the beauty of a sunrise, sunset, or clouds in the sky more than anyone who has ever lived. While flowers will be accepted for the memorial service at a later date, she would rather that you perform an act of service, love someone who seems unloveable, or donate to a charity that helps others in her name. She returns to the arms of Jesus Christ and has left the world a better place for her presence in it.
