Douglas MacArthur " Mack " Best

Douglas Macarthur Best "Mack" of Lagrange, GA was 75 years old at the time of his death on Thursday, May 18th, 2017. Mack was born April 24,1942 in Dothan, AL to Kermit K. Best and Mary Skipper Best.

Mack graduated from Jordan High School in Columbus, GA in 1960. He finished beauty school circa 1961 and started his career as a hairdresser and later became an instructor which led him to meeting his 1st wife, Janice Best. Mack was an entrepreneur and excelled in the craft of woodworking, discovering his passion as a luthier in his later years. He created beautiful guitars from intricately detailed grained wood, derived from a variety of top quality specimens and produced guitars that sounded as lovely as they are to behold. As his health failed, he pursued his lifelong ambition to paint. Using watercolor, he left behind a treasure trove of beautiful pieces that his family holds dear.

While Mack was born in Dothan, AL, his home for most of his life was Lagrange, GA. Mack was an avid reader and enjoyed a lifetime of learning, instilling the same inspiration in his children. He was affiliated with New Spring Church in Anderson, SC in the last 6 months of his life.

Mack is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Rita Ussery Best of Lagrange, GA, 3 children, Timothy M. Best (Sheila) of Pine Mountain, GA, Shelley Best of West Point, GA, and Jennie White (Kerry) of Belton, SC, 8 grandchildren, Michelle Russell (Michael), Maria Smith (Jamie), Katie Best, Ashley Best, Justin Best, all of Lagrange, GA, Evan White, Aliyah White, and Josiel White of Belton, SC. He also leaves behind 8 great - grandchildren and his mother, Mary Skipper Best of Birmingham, AL.

Mack was preceeded in death by his late wife, Janice Best (1975), and his father, Kermit K. Best (1990).
