Dorothy Wilkes

November 2, 1929 — September 15, 2022

Dorothy Snyder Wilkes, daughter of the late Ernest and Dollie Faulkner, went to be with her lord and savior on September 15, 2022. She is preceded in death by her first husband Leroy Garland Synder; her second husband Reverend Alston Wilkes III; her longtime companion/sweetheart Tom Townsend; her son Gerald Edwin Snyder; her sister Evelyn Faulkner Holtzclaw; and her granddaughter Erin Synder Bryant.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Gail Metcalf (Dr. Gerald H. Metcalf), her granddaughters Ashley Metcalf and Andrea Graddy (Johnathan); her sister Imogene “Jenkie” Berry (Wallace); her brother Ernest Faulkner (Mary); three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothy is also survived by her very special friends Deborah Chandler, Lynn Howe, and Joyce Tollison.

Dorothy was born and raised in Greenville, SC and was exceptionally proud to be a native Greenvillian. She enjoyed weekly trips to Falls Park with her companion, Tom – where they would walk over the falls on the park’s signature bridge.

Dorothy treasured moments spent with her friends, family, and neighbors. She was quick with a joke, and loved to hear the laughter of others. Countless happy hours were spent entertaining in her home, where everyone was always welcome.

Dorothy was known by all for her culinary skills – and her cakes and deserts were often the most anticipated part of holiday and family gatherings. Cooking was more than a hobby for Dorothy – it was a mission. She used her gift to bring food and nourishment to those who were unable to leave their homes.

Dorothy also loved the outdoors. She was an avid gardener and birdwatcher – her flower beds were something to behold. Dorothy loved traveling and exploring, particularly western North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. When she wasn’t spending time outdoors, she pursued her other passion – shoes. She loved shopping with family and hunting for the perfect pair of shoes.

Dorothy’s presence brought a certain sparkle and shining light to all who knew her. She was deeply loved by so many, and she will be sorely missed.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and could be seen every Sunday at Salem United Methodist.

The family would like to thank Southern Oaks assisted living (Dorothy’s home away from home) and their loving staff, especially Gail and Paz. They would also like to recognize her special friend John, who was like a big brother to her.

The family would also like to thank the team at Crescent Hospice for taking exceptional care of Dorothy. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Dorothy’s name to:
