Dorothy Louise Fairbairn Owen was born on July 15, 1920, in Barrie Ontario, Canada. She left us and her body behind to join her Lord and Savior in heaven on Monday, February 24, 2019. She is predeceased by her fiercely loyal and loving husband, William “Bill” Owen. They were married 80 years ago, on July 29, 1939. They leave behind three daughters, Sandy Jones, Joanna Hutton, Suzi Bailey, and six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Dorothy and Bill lived in many states from Michigan to Florida to South Carolina. Dorothy was known for her beautiful, well-designed yards and gardens, full of trees and paths and flowers. She did not think she was as artistically talented as her husband and daughters, but she had many talents, especially renovating houses with a frugal eye, fearlessly removing walls, improving floorplans, and making every one of the nearly 10 different homes better than when she and Bill had moved in. Dorothy loved visitors and proudly walked every one of them through her greatest joy: her homes. Although Dorothy did not have a love of cooking, she still felt it was her duty to provide food to everyone who came to visit. Copious plates of food too, and would not take a “No thank you, I’m full” for an answer when she offered, “Here, have some more!” She rarely let a visitor leave without giving them some little “gift”, a plant, or food-to-go, or one of the items she had purchased ahead of time just for giving away. Her love of having visitors to her home was perhaps second to her love of going out --to church or just about anywhere, if it was something she wanted to do, and her favorite thing to do was go to “lunch” or shopping. Though lunch always trumped shopping, and puppy dogs trumped everything.
Dorothy and Bill accepted the Lord into their hearts when they were young and spent their lives dedicated to their faith. As Dorothy was declining this past week, a hospice nurse was trying to encourage her to eat. But Dorothy said, with a voice weak with age but not in spirit, “I don’t need to eat. I’m going to heaven.” And pointing to the side of her room she added, “And there’s Bill. He’s standing right there, waiting for me.” We will miss you, Dorothy Louise Fairbairn Owen.
