Donald Lee Hicks

August 19, 1944 — October 14, 2024

Greenville, SC

Donald Lee Hicks, known by friends and family as Don, passed away on October 14, 2024, in Greenville, SC. Born on August 19, 1944, in Chicago, IL, Don is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anne Kotulek Hicks, and his brothers, Wesley and Jerry Hicks. Don grew up in Cleveland, OH where he earned Master Degrees in Mathematics and Physics at John Carroll University and later earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas/Arlington.

Don is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Bettye) Hicks, his sons, William McGinney (Stacey) and Jonathan McGinney (Tammy), and grandchildren, Geoffrey, Owen, Jacob, and Joseph McGinney, who will remember him for his love, wisdom, quick wit and constant support in all their endeavors.

Don's many areas of interest and hobbies included being an avid writer, loved every genre of music, art, travelling, restoring classic automobiles and woodworking. He was direct, compassionate and a no nonsense advocate for egalitarialism and community and always managed to possess a keen sense of humor in all situations. A life lived honorably deserves to be remembered. Don Hicks did not just exist; he lived. He did not just listen; he understood. He did not just learn; he mastered. And he did not just love; he cherished. As we say goodbye to a man of such character, we take solace in the fact that his journey was a journey well-traveled, and his story—one well told.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. More information will be posted when details are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations, etc. can be made to McCall Hospice House, Simpsonville, SC.
