Deidra Jacqueline Christie

Deidra V. Christie, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully at her home on August 26, 2024, surrounded by her devoted family. Born on September 18, 1944, in Graceville, FL, Deidra's life was a testament to the power of education, the joy of music, and the beauty of nurturing both plants and relationships.

Deidra's journey began as the cherished daughter of the late Monette and James M. VanLandingham. Her early years in Columbus, GA laid the foundation for a life marked by intellectual curiosity and a passion for helping others. She pursued her education with vigor, earning a BA degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL, and furthering her studies with an MA degree from Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

Her academic pursuits led her to a distinguished career in college education, where she served with dedication at institutions such as Furman University and Clemson University. Deidra's commitment to education shone brightest at Greenville Technical College, where she retired as a respected department head. Her colleagues and students alike remember her for her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support.

Beyond her professional life, Deidra was deeply involved in her community. Her melodious voice graced the church choir, and her fingers danced over piano keys, bringing joy to all who heard her play. Deidra's love for gardening allowed her to cultivate not just plants but also friendships, as she shared the bounty of her garden and the warmth of her heart with neighbors and friends.

Volunteering was second nature to Deidra, who always put others before herself. She could often be found cheering enthusiastically at her grandson Jacob's sporting events, a testament to her supportive and loving nature.

Deidra's legacy is carried on by her loving husband, James E. Christie, who stood by her side through a lifetime of shared dreams and cherished moments. Her spirit lives on in her daughter, Carrie L. Christie, and her son, Matthew C. Christie (Sara S.), who will forever be inspired by her example of grace and compassion. Her grandson, Jacob M. Christie, will continue to feel the strength of her love and encouragement in all his endeavors, and her late sister Brenda V. Miller.
