Claude Hampton Goodson Jr.

Claude Hampton Goodson, Jr.,81, of Greenville, passed away peacefully Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Open Arms (McCall) Hospice in Simpsonville, SC. Claude was born on July 5, 1936 in Lincolnton, NC, son of the late Claude Hampton Goodson, Sr. and Corrie MacMillan Goodson Hall.
Claude was a graduate of Lincolnton High School (Lincolnton, NC) and he attended North Greenville college (Tigerville) and Furman University (Greenville, SC). He received the highest honor of Scouting, the Eagle Scout rank, in 1950. While serving in the United States Air Force in Libya, Turkey and Germany, he was also a Scout Master in Libya. Claude spent many years working in the banking and insurance industry. He worked at Carolina Federal and First Federal in Greenville, SC, Savers Life in Winston-Salem, NC, and First Federal Savings and Loan (Vice President) in Jesup, GA. Claude was also a member of the Greenville Jr. Chamber of Commerce.
Claude is survived by his wife, Louise S. Goodson, step daughter Patricia (Len) Graddy of Midway, GA, and stepson Jeff (Sharon) Smiley of Tifton, GA, and step daughter-in-law Angie Smiley of Hinesville, GA. He is also survived by his step grandchildren Heather Graddy of Cleveland, OH, Kenneth (Teri) Smiley, III of Monroe, GA and Allison (Bryan) Hugli of Statesboro, GA and several step great grandchildren. Claude is also survived by his brother, Edward M. Goodson of Greenville, SC, nephews Chris A. Goodson of Greenville, SC and Eric E. Goodson of Raleigh, NC, niece Inge Goodson Bivins (David) of Fort Mill, SC and great nephews Joel Goodson of Raleigh, NC and Ethan and Evan Rhondes of Fort Mill, SC. He is preceded in death by his step son Kenneth Smiley, Jr.
A private service will be held at the Family Plot in Lincolnton, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Open Arms (McMall) Hospice, 1836 W. Georgia Rd., Simpsonville 29680 and/or Boy Scout Troop 707 Unity Presbyterian Church, 8210 Unity Church, Denver, NC 28037 in honor of his nephews, Ethan and Evan Rhodes, Eagle Scouts.
Cremation Society of South Carolina, 328 Dupont Drive, Greenville, SC is assisting the Goodson Family.
