Christopher Butler Fite, 75, of Taylors SC died on October 8, 2024. He was born in Nashville TN on April 7, 1949 to Harry and Katherin Fite. The oldest of five children, he was raised and went to school in Macon, Georgia graduating from Lanier High School in 1967.
He met his wife, Laurie, while attending Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia and they married in 1970. They immediately moved to Arlington Virginia where Chris served in the US Army until 1972. After he got out of the service, they moved back to Atlanta while he finished his degree in Industrial Management at Georgia Tech and served in the Atlanta Police Department. After graduating from Georgia Tech, he worked in Human Resources for various power companies across the Southeast.
He left the utility industry while the family, which by then included two daughters, lived in Brandon, Mississippi. He obtained his certification as a paramedic while serving as chief of the volunteer Crossgates Fire Department. He served as a paramedic for 20 years in both Mississippi and South Carolina.
Chris was very much a renaissance man. An Eagle Scout, he also earned the Order of the Arrow.. He was a long-distance motorcycle rider having ridden across the United States several times and to the Arctic Circle and back. He led five mission trips to Jamaica to build a medical clinic and reroof buildings hit by hurricanes. He was an avid ham radio operator preferring to use Morse Code to communicate rather than computers. He built furniture and was always willing to do handyman work for others. He was a master gardener who served on the board of the Greer Community Garden for a number of years. He loved his girls and his grandkids and was always to have discussions about any topic that they needed expert opinions on. He was a very devoted daddy to a procession of Australian Shepherds.
Chris is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laurie; his daughters, Rebecca Fite and Allison Burton; grandsons Christopher Russell, Jacob Russell and Fox Burton and granddaughter, Peyton Burton. He is also survived by all of his siblings – Elizabeth Coffey (Ron), Stephen Fite (Ginger), Alan Fite (Mary Ann), and Jonathan Fite (Sarah); Karen Fite; nine nieces and nephews, and four grandnephews.
In leiu of flowers, memorials may be given To Lee Road United Methodist Church.
