Catherine Fleming (Kay) Gushue, passed away on February 3, 2023 at 100 years young. She was born in Mount Vernon, New York to John J. Fleming and Martha L. Boland. In 1929, her family moved to New Rochelle, New York, where she attended Ursuline Academy, graduating in June 1941. After graduation, she attended Stoneleigh Junior College in Rye, New Hampshire, and Traphagen School of Design in New York City. In 1943, she took a job in the purchasing department of Johns Manville Corporation, where she worked until 1945. She met her husband, Joe Gushue in December 1945, and the couple married on October 5, 1946. They lived in Bronxville and Eastchester, New York until 1957, when her husband took a job with Texon, Inc. As a result, they moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts, where they raised their family. In 1983, they moved to Amelia Island Plantation, Florida, where they lived for over 30 years. Her husband predeceased her in 2010. She leaves behind three sons, Jack Gushue of Greer, South Carolina (Carol), Jay Gushue of St. Augustine, Florida (Susie), and Pete Gushue of Williamsburg, Virginia; along with three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gushue lived a full and active life, and made friends easily wherever she lived. She loved playing cards, especially bridge. What was more, she was always willing to learn new card games, such as canasta, which she learned in her 90s. She was a voracious reader, having belonged to several book clubs.
Kay’s passion was her family. She took an active role in her sons’ lives, playing the roles of teacher, cheerleader and advisor. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her universe, and she loved being “Nana” to them all.
The family would like to thank the kind caregivers at The Cascades and Regency Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, South Carolina, or a charity of your choice. There will be a memorial service at 11 AM on Friday, March 3, 2023 at Markley Chapel, Christ Church Episcopal, 10 N. Church Street, Greenville, SC.
