"Caron Elaine Wilson, a resident of Simpsonville, South Carolina, passed away on April 6, 2023, at the age of 65. For 37 years, she was the owner and manager of Freehaven Farm, a fiber farm with sheep, llamas, alpacas, emus and other animals she loved deeply. Through Freehaven, she instructed wood carving, spinning, weaving and sold equipment and materials for textile arts. Caron was born on April 22, 1957, in High Point, North Carolina, to the late Robert Buchanan Wilson and Esther Mae Ward. She is survived by many loving family members and friends.
Freehaven Farm has been a haven to many- whether human, or one of the 17 species that has graced this land over the years. Her heart and soul will forever be a part of this land. She had a mission to help people become more aware- and proactive in helping preserve what green spaces remain. Her mission statement for the farm was : “Since the beginning of time, mankind was awarded the responsibility of taking care of the earth and its creatures. He was put here to live with and to care for the animals of the land, the birds of the skies and the fish of the waters of life. In so doing, man must protect the very soil, skies and seas they inhabit so that there will be the necessary food and shelter for those creatures as well as for himself and his family. In return for man's care, the earth has provided food, clothing, shelter, transportation, work, companionship and entertainment for those who inhabit her. She asks only that we care for her - however minimally, so that her wonders will abound for the generations to come. The earth has truly been blessed - we must continue now more than ever to protect her from all the misuse and abuse she has endured, and reserve the respect she is due”.
She had a special bond with animals and was truly gifted with the ability to care for them. She treated them with respect, love and sacrificed for them over her own wants and needs many times. At the end of her life, her greatest concerns were that her animals and the farm be taken care of properly and expressing gratitude to all that were there for her.
Caron's passing is a great loss to her family, friends, and the community she served. Her legacy of hard work, dedication, and passion for animals, teaching textile arts, kayaking and care of the Earth will continue to inspire many. She will be remembered most for her love of animals, her artistry in fiber and wood, and her unwavering commitment to teach others to continue these skills and protect the Earth.
