Caroline Porcher Pinckney Massey

September 27, 1933 — June 19, 2023

Caroline Porcher Pinckney Massey, 89 of Greenville, SC died peacefully June 14,
2023, after a short battle with cancer. Known as “Pincky” to family and friends, she
was a fiercely independent, dignified, enthusiastic force who brought light, love,
and fun to those around her. She is survived by daughters Kay Cook (Roy) and
d’Rue Hazel (Tony), a son, Andy Massey (Sara) and grandchildren Amanda Cook,
Adam Cook (Jillian), Mari Hazel (Mark Mooningham), Katie Hazel Millwood (TJ),
Sarah Hazel, Meredith Massey Beall (Colton), Angela Massey (Neev Batavia), great
grandchildren Brooke Ashley, John Mooningham and Millie Mooningham, sister Ann
Daniel and brothers Richard Pinckney (Louise) and Heyward Pinckney (Linna). She
was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Jack Massey, her parents,
Eustace and Ruedelle Pinckney, sister, Ruedelle “June” Parry and brothers Eustace
“BB” Pinckney Jr, Elias Pinckney, Jimmy Pinckney, and David Pinckney. Known as
Aunt Caroline to an abundance of nieces and nephews, she loved her family
immensely to include her pets, Daphne and BK.
Born September 27, 1933, in Grahamville, SC, she graduated from Ridgeland High
School. After a successful career which included impacting the lives of generations
in her church community, Pincky retired as the Office Manager of Trinity Lutheran
Church in 1998. Widely respected for her welcoming nature, no-nonsense
approach, and quick wit, she made life-long relationships within her church family
and remained active at Trinity until her death. Caroline treasured her time as a
volunteer and believed in the organizations she supported to include Shriners
Hospital for Children and Safe Harbor as well as various outreach groups at Trinity.
She supported Justice Ministry and recognized the value in all people. An avid
golfer, gardener, cook and crossword solver, Caroline enjoyed her years of
retirement with her husband, Jack, traveling often and opening their home to
friends and family as much as possible. Her greatest joy, however, was being a
mother to her three children and a Nana to her seven grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Caroline shared her love for life and family with all who knew
her. It was a life well lived and well loved. The family is grateful to her friends at
Maple Brook Terrace Retirement Community who brought so much joy to her final
years and rejuvenated her competitive spirit with various games (Canasta,
Mahjong) and “Bridge with Caroline.” Special thanks to those who have been
present during Caroline’s illness, especially Lani Wise and Jean Raines.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be Saturday, June 24, 2023, 11:00 AM
at Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, SC with the Rev. James Parham presiding.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A
burial will occur at a later date in Okatie, SC at the Pinckney Family Cemetery. In
lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran
Church, 421 N. Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
