Carol Joy

December 26, 1927 — September 8, 2020

Carol Joy, 92, wife of the late George Joy, died September 8, 2020, in Greenville, SC.

Born in New York City, she lived in Oradell, NJ, and at a young age, she, her sister, and their mother, traveled through the Panama Canal to join their father in Spokane, WA, a trip she remembered fondly for the rest of her life. The family later moved to Arlington, VA, where Carol graduated from Washington-Lee HS in 1945, entered Peabody Institute Conservatory of Music, and earned a Teacher’s Certificate in Piano. Carol married her high school sweetheart, George, in 1947.

Carol was a lifelong Episcopalian, and the family was actively engaged in church activities in Arlington and Loudoun counties, VA; West Palm Beach, FL; and Greenville, SC, where she and George moved in 2001. Music was also a constant in her life: Carol taught piano to countless students and was an accomplished accompanist for musicals, concerts, and church services, playing both piano and organ. She never met a tune she couldn’t immediately hum and play by ear on the piano, easily transposing, when necessary, to a "better" key. Carol was a role model in balancing work and family, volunteering her time and talents, and accepting of all people.

Carol is survived by three daughters, Nancy (Ray), Evelyn (Jay), and Patricia (Marty), granddaughter, Allison (Chris), great-granddaughter, Emma Joy; along with her sister, Nancy, and many nieces and nephews, and their children.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Legacy at Southpointe Dr. and Regency SouthernCare Hospice for their kind and caring support.

A funeral service for Carol will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, SC, on Sunday, Nov. 15. Please call the church for details: 864-268-7280. She will be inurned with her late husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date when loved ones may safely gather.
