Boyce Fred Gregory, III, “Bud”, 52, died suddenly October 22, 2024. He was the beloved, only son of Boyce Fred Gregory, Jr., “Buddy”, of Greenville, and the late Annette Gage Gregory, “Annie”, of Hilton Head.
Bud spent his elementary through high school years in Hilton Head where he excelled in academics and athletics. During his senior year, as a defensive back, he and his teammates competed for the regional championship. He attended Anderson University. Swimming, playing games and sports, Bud spent many adventurous summer days with cousins in Greenville. He was awarded Most Valuable Player on his church basketball team. His grandmother, Patsy Gage, and friends, at Stone Lake Pool, began the Swimming Amateur Invitation League (S.A.I.L.) which is now the largest amateur swimming league in the nation. Bud fulfilled that legacy as a talented Classics swimmer every summer. He was truly a gifted, versatile athlete, who left his shy, quiet demeanor, to compete on the court, field, and pool so successfully.
Bud was a knowledgeable and faithful fan of Clemson athletics. He was the son of a Clemson graduate and grandson of Bobby Gage, an All American Hall of Fame Tiger football player, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player in the 1948 Gator Bowl and later drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bud was a believer and spent time every day in Scripture reading and prayer.
He fiercely fought against the grip of addiction his entire adult life. May his death bring greater awareness of this cruel disease and greater compassion for those who continue to struggle.
Surviving are his father, Buddy, sister, Patche Pratt, a beautiful and accomplished daughter, Addison, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Bud’s life will be held December 1, 2024 at 1 P.M. at Trinity Church of Greenville, 100 Pete Hollis Blvd. 29601
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud’s memory may be made to Trinity Church or The Phoenix Center where he received help and encouragement over the years.
